A JHSC is a joint worker-management committee required under BC's Workers Compensation Act. It identifies workplace hazards, makes recommendations to improve safety, and conducts regular inspections. WorkSafeBC certification training is required for all JHSC members.
BC workplaces with 20 or more regularly employed workers must establish a JHSC. Smaller workplaces may be required by WorkSafeBC to establish one. All JHSC members must complete WorkSafeBC approved training.
The WorkSafeBC JHSC certification program consists of two parts. Part 1 is delivered online (self-paced). Part 2 is an in-person workshop. Total time is approximately 8–12 hours combined.
JHSC certificates do not expire, but refresher training is recommended every 3 years to stay current with WorkSafeBC regulation updates and best practices.
All JHSC members β€” both worker and employer representatives β€” must complete the training. Co-chairs, secretary, and all voting members should be certified.
The program covers WorkSafeBC regulations, hazard identification, inspection procedures, accident investigation, meeting procedures, recommendations to management, and effective committee operations.
Yes β€” employers are legally required to provide JHSC training. The cost of training, including time off work to attend, must be covered by the employer under BC's Workers Compensation Act.
Yes β€” we offer group and corporate training sessions across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Call +1-604-617-0211 or email us to arrange a dedicated session for your committee.
